Halloween is almost upon us!  And Astoria truly delivers in the celebration department. Judith and Meg suggest some Halloween-oriented activities and such to make your Supah-H-Weekend lots of fun!  All events are on Saturday, unless specified otherwise.

Saturday brings us the epic events to be seen at Bohemian Hall (29-19 24th Avenue).  At 2pm there will be a pig roast (yum) along with beer specials, including a $20 unlimited tasting of close to a dozen beers from 5-10pm.  Stay for the Monster Mash, complete with music starting at 6pm, too.

At 7pm Studio Square (35-33 36th Street) begins their Halloween event.  Their  beer garden will be open with no cover, and first prize in their costume contest wins a trip for two to Munich for Oktoberfest 2010.  That’s one crazy awesome prize!

In Long Island City, Murray Hill hosts the Starving Artists Halloween Ball at The Foundry (42-38 Ninth Street).  From 8pm-midnight, enjoy an open bar, dancing, gift bags, a raffle, and a costume contest with a celebrity panel (Zuzanna Szadkowski, Shells, Bradford Louryk, and Lynn Nottag).  Tickets are $42.

LIC Bar (45-58 Vernon Blvd) is hosting Bad Buka’s Haunted Masquerade Ball, starting at 8pm.  There will be cash prizes for best costume, and drink specials of course.  The band Bad Bukas will play from 9-11pm. $10 cover.

Southern Astoria wine bar Rèst Âü Ránt (corner of 30th Street and 35th Avenue) begins celebrating at 9pm.  They’ll have plenty of food, drink specials, and prizes for best costumes.

Hell Gate Social (12-21 Astoria Blvd) is presenting probably one of the more creative nights in town:  The Carnival.  George and Company will transform the space into “a freaky carnival with games, cotton candy, and prizes. Dress up as your favorite carnival attraction, or any other crazy costume you can think of.” Prizes for the best costumes.  Fun starts at 9pm.

Cavo (42-18 31st Avenue) is known for their splashy Halloween parties – and they’ll be celebrating on all three nights leading up to this spooky occasion.  Thursday night will feature an Electronic Halloween party with you guessed it…electronica beats; Friday will be a Latin night with a costume twist (winners get cash prizes) and Saturday is the big Halloween blow-out with a serious costume competition, with a grand prize of $1,000 in cash. Pretty sweet!

Ovelia (34-01 30th Avenue) is hosting their annual Halloween Ball, which starts at 11 pm.  You won’t have to pay a cover so come whenever you please and get ready to enjoy, drink and eat.

According to my sources on Astorians, Time Cafe (44-18 Broadway) starts their Halloween festivities at 11pm.

If Karaoke is your thing, you can enjoy it on Halloween at Karaoke Shout (32-46 Steinway Street).  This whole week, actually, you can get a free shot with your costume.  There will be a costume contest on both Saturday and Sunday.  The staff will choose the hottest costume and give out prizes every couple of hours.  So come prepared!

And if you still can’t get enough of karaoke this weekend, keep in mind the Astoria Brewhouse (28-50 31st Street) on Friday night.  They’ll not only test your vocal skills but their annual costume party is also in store, as well as some fun drink specials.

The Greater Astoria Historical Society is organizing a Halloween Walking Tour at 3pm on Saturday that will focus on murders and death along the East River in Astoria/LIC, including those on ships like the General Slocum.  The tour will start under the Hellgate Bridge at Astoria Park and continue to Socrates Sculpture Park.  The tour will be held rain or shine. $15 non-members, and $10 members and those who come in costume.  Bring your camera!

The Astoria Halloween Parade will start on Ditmars Blvd between 31st and Steinway at 11am on Halloween day.  It will end with a party/costume contest at TD Bank.  This is a great event for the kids, so bring your little munchkin along to enjoy.

If you need an amazing makeup job for your costume, consider making an appointment at Rejuvenate Face and Body (26-17 23rd Avenue).  In their words:
Halloween brings out the little kid in us all, why not go all out and get your makeup done here! Whether you want to look like a beautiful fairy or transformed into a vicious vampire, our makeup artist, Christina will use her makeup techniques to make your Halloween unforgettable!

Due to time sensitivity, Halloween makeup ($40) will be done by appointment only.

Looking for delicious Halloween treats, especially for the kiddies? If so, make sure to visit Astor Bake Shop (12-23 Astoria Blvd) as they’ll be featuring their special bat cookies and tombstone cupcakes at just $2.50 each. In addition to looking pretty (as in pretty scary) you can count on fantastic flavors that are known to consistenly come out of this bakery.

Another sweet shop that’s also making some spooky creations is Martha’s Country Bakery (36-21 Ditmars Blvd).  Known for their delicious cupcakes, they’ll be creating some Halloween specialties in mixed flavors at about $2.25 each.
