If you’re anything like me, a house is not a home until it’s filled with happy, healthy plants. When I first arrived in our fair ‘hood, I was shocked at how limited options were for purchasing great plants and supplies but then I stumbled upon Interior Foliage Design. For years, this to-the-trade floral design company kept their greenhouses to themselves, selling only to wealthy clients and businesses in Manhattan, but last year they quietly opened their facilities (and the largest greenhouse in New York City!!) to the public. Stop by to pick up exotic houseplants, trees, and other green goodies. Their website even indicates they do floral arrangements, special occasions, and holiday décor.

In addition to being a great resource for plants, Interior Foliage Design is also a pioneer in greening NYC! IFD has one of New York City’s first green roofs, which is planted year round with thirsty native succulent species that help prevent storm water runoff, clean the air, and help to cool the building during warmer months. IFD also has a solar water heater on their roof- smart!

Check out their blog, The Nutrient, for fun fact about their project, including:

Each 10,000 square foot green roof can capture between 8,000 and 12,000 gallons of water in each storm, the evaporation of which will produce the equivalent of between a thousand and two thousand tons of air conditioning — enough heat removal to noticeably cool 10 acres of the city.”  Wow.
