Have you heard of the Newtown Literary magazine? It’s the first literary journal founded and established in Queens, exclusively for writers with a strong connection to our borough. Not only does this fantastic journal provide a voice for talented Queens writers, it also aims to encourage and motivate future writers of Queens to hone their craft.

To make this goal a reality, Newtown Literary has established the Queens Young Authors and Poets Contest, now gearing up to kick off its second year. The contest, open to students grades three through twelve, will invite young writers to submit original poetry or prose for the chance to be published in the journal, as well as the chance to read their work at the awards ceremony. Information on how to apply will be released in October, so keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.

Newtown Literary has launched an Indiegogo campaign to help make this year’s contest bigger and better than before: improving outreach, establishing a strong judging process, and throwing an awards ceremony worthy of such an exciting event. Take a look at the campaign’s page for more info on the contest, and peruse the excellent donor perks. (Gift certificates to neighborhood favorites like QNSMADE and Astoria Coffee, t-shirts, and more!)

Our beloved Astoria Bookshop sells copies of past issues, and has hosted launch parties to celebrate their arrival. Appearing in this magazine is a huge accomplishment for writers of all experience levels and a great way to get your work noticed!

For more information and submission guidelines for writers young and old, check out Newtown Literary’s official website.  Now encourage any young people you know to get writing!
