Mackenzi Hearts- Lefkos Pirgos Bakery

Nestled under the busy N/W elevated train, is an Astoria gem not to be overlooked. Inside the white and blue dessert palace, fake clouds float on the ceiling, chairs are permanently encased in plastic and men play backgammon day and night. It’s not entirely the atmosphere that keeps me coming back to Lefkos Pirgos, but rather it’s the amazing, amazing desserts. Start with Mediteranian classics like baklava or kataifi, but stay for my favorites; decadent almond cakes, chocolate mouse cake, flans, cheesecakes, and more. Dont forget, they also have a full bar (!!) and a wide variety of coffee drinks and teas. For me, Lefkos is the perfect place to take out of town guests or people new to the neighborhood. Though the service can be, well, less than friendly, the sweet treats more than make up for it. 22-85 31st St, at the Ditmars Stop.

I agree that lefkos has decent pastries–although not great in my estimation–but the often terrible service (as you note above) and the fact that the staff sometimes does not enforce the no-smoking ban inside nor outside leaves me unable to enjoy the place. The overhead screeches of the N/W are exactly the kind of thing that friends visiting from the midwest think is what’s terrible about living in NYC. I wouldn’t take out-of-towners there.
