Sarah Porter on When I Cast Your Shadow

Join us as Sarah Porter discusses her new book When I Cast Your Shadow. In her highly-anticipated standalone novel, When I Cast Your Shadow, Porter brings readers back to Brooklyn, New York…this time weaving urban sprawl with haunting dreamscapes of the Land of the Dead.

Ruby Bohnacker is overcome by grief and longing after her troubled older brother, Dashiell, dies of an overdose. While she clings to his memory—and the pair of red boots he bought for her shortly before his death—her father is equally determined to forget Dashiell ever existed, and her twin brother, Everett, copes by trying to avoid feeling at all.

But at night, Ruby is haunted by dreams of Dashiell that grow more intense each time. She doesn’t know about the forces at work behind those dreams: Dashiell isn’t just a figment of her subconscious, but is real, at least in the sense that he’s using Ruby’s dreams to possess her and take control of her body.

When confronted by Everett, Dashiell doesn’t withdraw, but instead attempts to persuade Everett to submit to possession as well. Claiming he has to tie up loose ends, Dashiell is actually on the run from dark forces crueler and more powerful than anything the Bohnacker siblings have ever imagined.

Equal parts supernatural horror and family drama, When I Cast Your Shadow will undoubtedly draw in readers of all ages who enjoy the works of Kendare Blake, Madeleine Roux, and Ransom Riggs.

“You’ll never think of your nightmares the same way again. Darkly seductive. Sarah Porter’s writing glitters and her storytelling stuns in this twisted tale of siblings, love, and death.” —Stephanie Garber, author of Caraval

“[E]ach of Porter’s characters remains dynamic, distinct, and vividly realized…A wildly innovative, whip-smart, and utterly spellbinding testament to family, memory, and love—and the messes and miracles of each poised to possess legions of readers.” — Booklist starred review
