Songs for caged animals, by caged animals. Friday, February 9th CAPTIVES COLLECTIVE PRESENTS Ruderals and Coyote Cinema at The Wolfhound
Ruderals are an acoustic folk-punk trio, comprised of Ben Absurdo (guitar, vocals, bass), Kyle Rogers (guitar, vocals, bass, harmonica, electric kazoo), and Keith Malonis (drums, handsomeness). Originally formed as a way to flesh out full-band performances of Rogers’ and Absurdo’s solo compositions, the band quickly took on an identity of its own, combining a raw, sometimes-nasty rhythmic energy with an exploratory, even experimental spirit, always grounded by the cynicism and self-deprecation of its two lead singers. Wild, manic, and to some degree unpredictable, their live performances have earned them the monicker of “Astoria’s Ramones,” as Miguel Hernandez, booker for Astoria Music Collective, puts it. The band are currently working on recordings. You can find their first release “Phone Cuts” here: https://ruderals.bandcamp.com/releases
Coyote Cinema is a folk-rock band led by Astoria-based poet and singer-songwriter Elise Levitt. A native of Woodmere, Long Island, Elise spent her young adulthood crafting stanzas on napkins and tossing out prose like free samples. In 2015, she met poet and spoken word artist Ben Absurdo while playing Astoria’s open mic scene, and the following year formed the band with Absurdo on bass, Keith Malonis on drums, and Kyle Rogers on mandolin. Since then, Coyote Cinema has played clubs, bars, and venues throughout NYC.
The Wolfhound is a modern authentic neighborhood Irish bar located on 30th Avenue in the heart of Astoria. The Wolfhound offers draft, craft, and bottled beers, fine whiskies and scotches, traditional and modern drinks, and hosts live music/events/parties/sports.
Captives Collective is an association of musicians who, each in our way, tell a story of human domestication — what it means to be a restricted and self-restricting animal — through music, poetry, and whatever other mediums and genres we see fit. We need not always call it by name, but the pains we express refer back to the dull, pounding discomfort and ultimately prehistorical traumas of civilized life, just as our joys are the howls of a wild beast in the middle of a parking lot. We make music, put on shows, and write stories, poems, and essays. A zine and website are currently in the works. Our first release was Kyle Rogers’ solo debut “Songs” which is available here: https://kylerogers-music.bandcamp.com/releases
