One of the many ethical problems with mass incarceration is the provision of medical care and research. What kind and quality of healthcare do we owe the incarcerated? How should pregnant women in prison be treated? How should transgender individuals be housed in the prison system? What provisions — if any — are made for incarcerated people with disabilities? Is the prison system really the largest mental health provider in the United States? What services are provided for those with mental illness? We will also discuss ethical issues involving conducting medical and psychological research on prisoners, and what we can learn about the care given to the incarcerated from TV shows like Orange is the New Black or Oz.
