Free Writing Class: Everyday Stories, Everyday Plots

Attention Queens writers—both experienced and new-to-writing: free creative writing classes taught by the best in Queens!

Newtown Literary Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting prose and poetry in Queens, in partnership with Queens Library, is offering free creative writing classes.

Our last class of the season will be led by David Burr Gerrard on Saturday, June 1st from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Queens Library on Broadway at 40-20 Broadway (Astoria):

“Everyday Stories, Everyday Plots”

Too often, writers think of plot in terms of bangs and whimpers: either there are explosions, or there are characters wandering around feeling sad and not doing anything. Through generative writing exercises and readings from authors such as Alfredo Bryce Echenique, John Cheever, and Alice Walker, this class will explore how you can give your characters simple, even mundane goals that enliven your fiction.

Burr Gerrard is the author of The Epiphany Machine (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 2017) and Short Century (Rare Bird, 2014). He teaches creative writing at the 92nd Street Y, The New School, The Yale Writers’ Workshop, Catapult, and the Sackett Street Writers’ Workshop. He lives in Queens with his wife and daughter.

This program is made possible, in part, with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, as well as with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
