American Bolero Dance Company (ABDC) celebrates its 20th Anniversary with the premiere of FlamencoLIC, a new signature production, directed and choreographed by ABDC’s Artistic Director Gabriela Granados, that showcases popular flamenco and rarely performed classical Spanish dance styles, along with arias and duets from Spanish operetta (or Zarzuela), within an intimate black box theatrical setting that lends the audience an up close and personal show-going experience.
Two concerts will take place on June 11th and 12th at The Secret Theatre, located near the Company’s base in the heart of Long Island City’s artists’ quarters.
American Bolero Dance Company was founded by Ms. Granados in 1996 with a mission to preserve, teach and present performances in the United States that accurately represent the music, history and the traditional dances of Spain and its Latin American influences. Following its incorporation in 1998, the Company made its debut at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Since then, ABDC has presented its signature productions to rave reviews in the New York, the Mid-Atlantic States, and in Europe. Exploring the rhythmic intricacies and song literature of Flamenco, the refined and stylized repertory of Clásico Español and the traditions of the Escuela Bolera, ABDC’s productions are noted for their theatricality, imaginative choreography and authentic costuming. FlamencoLIC is no exception to this.
A spirited and varied program that journeys through different eras and music and dance genres, FlamencoLIC will surely please audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Classical compositions by such masters as Albeníz, Bretón, Lara, Lecuona and Sarasate as well as traditional flamenco dances like Soleá, Garrotín and Tientos will be presented. The production also boasts a stellar ensemble of some of the finest flamenco and classical dance and music performers from New York City, including:
