Under the Whale, by choreographer James Martin, is a vehicle for young dancers to have a voice in the conversation about climate change. It highlights their anger and frustration as they see the adult world fecklessly denying climate change and compounding social injustice. The piece is performed by twenty-nine dancers of the Sophomore class to a sound score comprising text by James Martin and excerpts from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. The choreography embraces multi dance forms as its social justice and climate change message swells our current youth movement’s raised voices for gun control. Mr. Martin is also making an essay/documentary film about the process of creating Under the Whale, and the difficulties inherent in political art.
In its new modern facilities located at the vibrant Kaufman Astoria Studios in Astoria Queens, The Frank Sinatra School of the Arts provides a rich educational program that includes a rigorous academic curriculum, pre-conservatory studio work, experiences with cultural institutions, and participation in community service. The dance core curriculum includes ballet, modern and contemporary dance enriched by master classes, workshops and choreographic commissions in multi-idiomatic and world dance forms.
