It’s National Chocolate Day on October 28

In case you haven’t heard the news, tomorrow, Saturday, October 28 is National Chocolate Day. Sounds like just the kind of food holiday we need during these trying times. Here are a handful of ideas for the day—and if you have some suggestions, please leave us a comment!

Hot Chocolate Drinks

OK Cafe (22-04 33rd Street) makes their mocha with deeply-flavored Taza Chocolate and Counter Culture coffee. The peanut butter hot chocolate at Il Bambino (34-08 31st Ave) is also a winner. The presence of Ghirardelli cocoa in Leli’s Bakery’s hot chocolate (don’t forget the whipped cream) makes the folks at Mommy Poppins declare this is one of the best hot chocolates in Astoria; Sweetleaf in LIC (34-08 31st Avenue) also gets a shout out for their hot chocolates, as does Cannelle Patisserie (5-11 47th Avenue), which “chops up chocolate bars into its steamed milk and cream”—get there early to enjoy one of their kouign amann pastry, which fly out of there with the early risers.

Cold Chocolate Drinks

The thick milkshakes at Bareburger (33-21 31st Ave, original location; 23-01 31st Street) always satisfy and come in a variety of flavors, including chocolate. You can even mix it up with peanut butter or strawberry. And vegans are all right there—they have coconut ice cream and hemp milk. Mom’s (33-01 31st Avenue) makes a couple of chocolate-oriented milkshakes, including The Thick Mint and Mr. Fluffleupagus.

Gelato

The La Guli Chocolate—chocolate gelato with a thick ribbon of caramel running through it—is an Astoria classic at La Guli Bakery (29-15 Ditmars Blvd). The stracciatella gelato at WHA reader favorite Martha’s Bakery (36-21 Ditmars Blvd) is also quite good.

Baked Goods

Chip NYC’s (30-06 34th Street) chocolate peanut butter cookies “are amazing,” according to WHA’s Mackenzi. Martha’s Bakery has plenty of chocolate items to soothe your inner chocoholic. Also check in with Single Girl Cookies to see what she is up to. Leli’s Bakery (35-14 30th Ave) has epic chocolate croissants—chocolate inside and mini chocolate chips on the outside. The freshly made ring-shaped loukoumades at Cafe Boulis (30-15 31st Avenue) are also excellent drizzled with Nutella.

And while it’s hard to predict their arrival, Family Market (29-15 Broadway) often carried soft Oreos which are, to put it lightly, crazy delicious. That said, they do carry a variety of Pocky snacks, many of which are made with chocolate. If you want just a single taste of something luxurious, Parisi Bakery (30-17 Broadway) is the place—their small chocolate cream puffs are the perfect pick-me-up treat. Head to The Thirsty Koala (35-12 Ditmars Blvd) for their excellent caramel slices, topped with Callebaut Belgian dark chocolate and a sprinkle of sea salt.

Chocolate Bars

Astoria Bier & Cheese (34-14 Broadway and 35-11 Ditmars Blvd) has a selection of high-end chocolate bars. Titan Food (25-56 31st Street) also carries a selection of chocolate bars. Give Parrot Market (31-12 Ditmars Blvd) on Ditmars a try for their selection of Milka bars.

Your Local Drugstore

Check out their bags and bags and bags of chocolate candy for Halloween. Current favorites: chocolate peanut butter pumpkins from Reese’s and triple chocolate KitKat bars.
