Have you heard? The Bonnie is giving Astoria a reason to look forward to Wednesday nights with their new Brew & Bite Night series. Every Hump Day from 6-11pm, they will be featuring three beers from a local brewery paired with four courses created with local ingredients, all for the very low price of $39 per person.

For their official launch last night, the folks at The Bonnie offered to treat us to a complimentary meal, and we jumped at the opportunity.  For their first event, they teamed up with Gun Hill Brewing Company, a microbrewery located in the Bronx. Take a look at the gorgeous spread!

The beers from Gun Hill were excellent, the food itself was on another level. We started with an Amuse-Bouche of roast beet, kumquat, and chicken skin. The dish was a crispy, salty/sweet beginning to the meal, and provided the guilty pleasure satisfaction that results from eating chicken skin. Side note: how many of you learned what Amuse-Bouche (bite-size) means from watching Top Chef?

The appetizer course was a curried kate wing with black quinoa, radish, and cilantro. What really stuck out to me with this dish was how fresh every tasted, which proves they’re using high-quality, local ingredients. The fried texture of the fish paired nicely with the clean taste of the quinoa and vegetables.

The super-rich entree, braised beef cheek with celery root risotto and watercress, was comfort food suited perfectly for the windy, chilly night. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, reminiscent of a high-quality brisket, and the risotto was perfectly creamy. This is the kind of dish that will be missed when winter officially ends and lighter menu items steal the spotlight.

After all that eating, there was ALMOST no room for dessert. However, once this dish was brought out, there was no way the treat wouldn’t be devoured. The dark chocolate and blood orange napoleon was a combination of sweet deliciousness: fruity, chocolate-y, and crunchy. It was a fantastic ending to a very impressive meal.

Major thank you to The Bonnie for treating us during your first Brew & Bite night! Since this weekly event will be featuring different breweries and dishes each week, we’re excited to see what they come up with next. We’ll be back!
