Openings, Closings and Rumors: Mid-Winter 2020 When was the last time you enjoyed grocery shopping? With cramped aisles, chilly temperatures, and hard-to-find items, picking up the supplies you need to cook delicious meals at home can seem like a chore. But fear not, home cooks: the soon-to-be-revealed Mediterranean Foods on 23rd Ave might be able to change that! Chances are, you’ve visited a Mediterranean Foods store before, as they currently have two locations in the neighborhood: one at 30-12 34th St, and another at 23-18 31st Street. We Heart Astoria was offered a sneak peek of their brand new store, and let us be the first to tell you: it’s AWESOME. The store is big, bright, and chock-full of unique, delightful items. Pictures provided by photographer extraordinaire Marielle Solan! The store is well stocked with staples, but also focuses on specialty Greek items. If you’re looking for stuffed vine leaves, Greek honey, cookies, chocolates, spreads, and other treats, this is the spot for you. Two aspects of the new store that are fabulous, but are being kept secret from the public, are a fantastic olive bar and olive oil station for tastings. Once they are revealed, they are sure to be a huge hit. The olive bar is coming, but we can’t show it to you just yet :) Another selling point to the new shop? Cheese, cheese, and more cheese! There will be over 20 types of feta cheese alone. For something a little different, owner Tommy recommends their versatile Halloumi cheese, which works great fried, grated, and as complement to smoked meat. In addition to groceries, Mediterranean Foods will also be whipping up sandwiches to-go with a panini presser, and will feature a fresh baked goods section stocked with Greek sweets. Their official grand opening hasn’t been announced yet, but stay tuned! We’ll fill you in once we get the scoop. Until then, start dreaming up what you can do with all that cheese!
