Talking About Changes in Astoria and LIC

This weekend brings us a very interesting event, a discussion about how Astoria and LIC have changed and what may be in store for us down the road. The event is called “Where Do We Go From Here? Behind the Hype About Astoria and LIC” and takes place at the Greater Astoria Historical Society at 1 p.m. this Saturday, January 31. More about this event:

Astoria and Long Island City have vaulted to the top of New York City‘s most buzzed-about neighborhoods. Just how much will the neighborhoods change a few years down the road? A panel of community leaders will discuss the neighborhoods’ ongoing changes and make predictions for the future.

The roundatable will be moderated by Adrienne Onofri, author of the new book, Walking Queens: 30 Tours for Discovering the Diverse Communities, Historic Places, and Natural Treasures of New York City’s Largest Borough. Participants include:

• New York City Council members Costa Constantinides and Jimmy Van Bramer
• Richard Mazda, founder of the Secret Theatre and LIC Arts Open
• Real estate broker Demetrius Partridge
• Sarah Obraitis, co-owner of the Michelin-starred M. Wells
• Comedian and activist Ted Alexandro
• Photographer Salvador Espinoza
• Kambri Crews, creator of Q.E.D., a new cultural/educational venue in Astoria
• Meg Cotner, author and blogger

Yes, that’s right—I’ll be on the panel! I’m really looking forward to chatting about this topic and hearing my colleagues and friends share their thoughts, too.

There will be a book signing at the end, which should be around 2:30 p.m. Adrienne will be available to put her own John Hancock on your copy of Walking Queens.
