You may have walked by Mike’s Diner on 31st Street and seen the big plywood fence around the front (matches, to some extent, the gigantic blue plywood fence around the northwest stairwell at the Ditmars Station) and wondered, “what’s up with that?” From what we were able to tell, it’s just renovations, and Mike’s Diner is not going anywhere. The DOB records indicate this has been in the works, at least as far as the City goes, since end of last year. Here’s what they aim to do:

REMOVE AND REPLACE EXISTING STOREFRONT, REMOVE INTERIOR DOOR AND PORTION OF EXISTING INTERIOR PARTITION TO CREATE HALF WALL.

Their website indicates they’ll be back open May 26 (Memorial Day). We’ll stop by and see what the new look is like!

Just wondering if you knew if there might be new owners? Since the renovations I have no recognized a single employee there. I wasn’t on like first name basis with anyone but there were wait staff I noticed often but I no longer recognize anyone. Maybe I’m just going at different times, I don’t know, but I thought it might be possible they’re under different management or something.
