Several weeks ago we received an invite to Hemlines & Waistlines, the brainchild of QCA and artist Mark Salinas, and this little bit from the invite had us totally curious:

Visual Artist Mark Salinas introduces an edible evening of fashion, with guest presentations from NYC Designers and Fashion Personalities. Signature looks, outrageous trends, and all time faves will be shared in this intimate dining setting, inspiring a multi-course menu never before seen on any runway.

Sounds amazing; we’re in! Today we’re thrilled to share a Q&A with artist Mark Salinas. Like what you see? You can purchase tickets to the event here.

Tell us a little about how this event came together? It’s an interesting pairing, we’d love to hear more about the background of the event:

The QCA asked me if I’d be interested in helping brainstorm an Artist Dinner Series to benefit their High School to Art School Program– a scholarship for talented high school seniors typically from underserved communities.

The HS2AS program not only helps students financially but also assists in portfolio development, art education instruction, and career insight. As a youth, I understood the financial struggles and anxiety of getting that first step through the door of college, and now as a Queens artist,  I jumped at the chance to help.

My dinner idea was to curate an evening where I’d invite Fashion Designers and Fashion Personalities to give small ‘show-n-tell’ presentations of their work, via monitors and mannequins, and translate each presentations into ‘eat-n-drink’- ultimately turning fashion into food!

Chef Dave and I will translate the 6-7 guest presentations into a multi-course meal: cocktail, hors d’oeuvres, appetizers, salad, entrée, and dessert.  Our interpretation will be via color, pattern, texture, shape, origin, maybe even play on words.  It’s very much a creative challenge Chef Dave and I are giving ourselves to turn a fashion presentation into something edible.

Hemlines & Waistlines will be a celebration of Food and Fashion- the first of four QCA Artist Dinner Series in 2014.

What should guests expect the night of the event?

This will be a rare opportunity in an intimate dining setting to really hear the voice of the Designers & Fashion Personalities speak about what makes Fashion so special to them.  Of course, guests can expect the sponsor step-n-repeat banner at our entrance with a professional photographer to capture all the fun moments.  In addition, we are amassing a formidable list of very nice raffle items and gift bags!  We will also have HS2AS students present at the event, making quick 60 second sketches of guests.

Where do you live in Queens? What are a few of your favorite local things to do/see/eat?

I have been a Sunnyside resident for 16 years.  I really appreciate the spacious peace and quiet of the neighborhood. It’s a great central location to live and not very far from any direction you want to go.  And I will travel all over Queens for food- La Pollera Colorada (Sunnyside), Sri Pra Phai (Woodside), Café Henri (LIC), Xi’an (Flushing), Rizzo’s (Astoria), Bunker (Ridgewood), and the list goes on!

Why was QCA the right partner for this event?

I am a two-time QCA art grant recipient for community beautification projects I created here in Queens.  The QCA has a vested interest in supporting their local artists and their community.  I’m honored they chose me to help with this opening Dinner Series.

What will you wear to the event?

We are encouraging guests to express their fashion personality- anything goes!  Be creative!  As for me, well, that will be a surprise!
