If you’ve been missing the Astoria Park track and soccer field, get excited, because the totally renovated facilities are OPEN—seven months ahead of schedule! The reconstruction project began last fall, part of the NYC Gov “Anchor Parks” program, in which they are investing $150 million into five destination parks to make them new again. The other four chosen parks were: Saint Mary’s Park in the South Bronx, Highbridge Park in Manhattan, Betsy Head Park in Brooklyn, and Freshkills Park on Staten Island. The Astoria Park track was scheduled to open in May, but thanks to “a great contractor, good weather, and no unforeseen conditions, we’ve been able to open it up seven months early,” said a parks department rep. This included a complete reconstruction of the track, along with a brand new interior synthetic turf soccer field. The Track and Field is “phase one” of Anchor Parks at Astoria, and a second phase will update Charybdis Playground (by the pool) and comfort station. All photos credited to Daniel Avila/NYC Parks. They removed all of the pull up bars, push up bars, inversion benches surrounding the track & filed that the young men of color used to work out and replaced them with a warm up station with equipment Popularly used by white people. There’s 2 pathetic small pull up bars and inversion benches under the bridge on 21st st off to the corner, no view, no sunlight. Coincidence? I think not.
