Chappetto Square—which you may not know by its name—is the smaller park at the south end of Astoria Park which includes an outdoor hockey rink, WWII memorial plaque and children’s playground (located at Hoyt Ave & 23rd St).

According to the NYC Parks Department, it is being “substantially reconstructed under the Community Parks Initiative (CPI).” They will be installing new asphalt pavement, pedestrian lighting, fencing, seating areas and drinking fountains. Feedback from community park-goers influenced the main design priorities, which include:

  • Four seal-coated ecua-volley courts (a variant of volleyball invented and played in Ecuador)
  • Net-less posts to allow players to set up their own games
  • Additional landscaping and greenery
  • Shaded seating area for passive recreation

$4.5 million from Mayor de Blasio is funding the project, and construction is expected to be completed by August 2020.
