It’s called Sweet Scene, and we reached out to the owner, Eleni, to learn more. First, about the drinks—they’re going to use Lavazza coffee for their espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, frozen drinks, etc. “We’re going to be making Greek coffees as well,” says Eleni. “We’ll offer traditional Greek coffee, as well as frappes and a traditional Greek summer favorite frappe with ice cream!” They will also be selling Serendipity’s frozen hot chocolate (“a childhood favorite for me”). Photo credit: Sweet Scene Regarding gelato and baked goods, along with croissants they’ll also be offering spinach and cheese pies, all baked in-house. Eleni tells us, “I’ve always loved baking, even from the time I was a little girl. If you ask a couple of my friends from high school, they’ll say I won them over with my baking.” An then there’s the “gelato that’ll transport you right to Italy” from Mia Gelato, perfect for this time of year. As far as how to purchase food there, there will be counter service along with 10-15 seats indoors. They are also working on getting their outdoor cafe permit. As for why they chose this location, read on. “We’ve always loved 34th Avenue and it was one of the locations we’ve always been looking at for vacancies,” explains Eleni. “We originally wanted to open up an ouzeri, which is a Greek tapas style restaurant, which would serve wines, beers, and of course ouzo and raki (suma, which is a bit like grappa), but once we found the location we knew that a coffee/sweet shop would be a much better match for the spot and size of the store. My mom has always wanted to open up a store, and when this opportunity arose we couldn’t pass it up.” They expect to be open by the end of the month and are adding their final touches now, as well as creating their menus. We look forward to checking out Sweet Scene when it’s open. Thanks for letting us in on the enticing details, Eleni!
