Twitter Facebook Email Print Last weekend when I participated in the panel discussion at GAHS, an audience member asked (during the audience question part of the event) us all, “What’s going on at the old Uncle George’s?” Another Astorian stood up and said, “a Greek restaurant is opening up there.” He then proceeded to tell us that the chef behind the now closed Aegean Cove restaurant—much beloved by its fans but considered “too far from the subway”—is going to be part of this new venture. (For reference, Aegean Cove was located at 20th Avenue and Steinway. The old Uncle George’s space certainly is much more central to most Astorians.) The chef involved with this potential new restaurant would be Christos Christou, who you’ll find at Yefsi Estiatorio on York Street in the 70s in Manhattan. The Astorian who shared this info knows Christou and that’s where the information comes from. He estimated that the restaurant would be open early summer, but anyone who has been paying attention to restaurant openings in this town knows it can take longer than an expected timeline. In the property’s Department of Buildings record, Ioannis Arvanitis of Omonia is also involved; it’s been speculated before that the Omonia folks have something to do with this property (33-19 Broadway). We’ll see what else we can find out, so stay tuned. If you know anything yourself, feel free to drop us a note.
