While chatting recently with Michele about Sugarfreak, we also discussed her third business, Pie vs. Cake, a bakery she’s opening at 30-08 36th Street. This tiny space will offer cakes and pies (both mini and full sized, as well as custom cakes), and homemade ice cream. No baking will be done on the premises (it will happen in a nearby commercial bakery), but the sweets and their recipes will be determined by Michele. The hope is to open mid-October.

The space has been empty for a while, originally home to something called Pozaro, and a later business called Coffee Done Right. It’s quite small—15 x 20 feet—so it’s clear that strictly retail makes the most sense. You’ll be able to step in, buy your sweets, and be done. Currently it’s built out, sporting, in Michele’s words, a “whitewashed Americana/Vintage Circus look.”

I asked her what pies and cakes she’s particularly excited about, and there were three—hummingbird cake, lemon chess pie, and Ovaltine cake. She also hopes to make an ice cream dessert similar to a concrete, and by that she means she wants to offer a milkshake with a slice of pie or cake added to it. I’ve had such a thing before where a piece of pumpkin pie was blended with a vanilla milkshake—it was ridiculously good.

As someone who loves sweets, this is great news and I’m looking forward to stopping in for something delicious once it’s open.
