It’s almost that time again—time for Open House NY Weekend! These two days—October 11 and 12 this year, as well as October 10 for Factory Friday—where you get the chance to check out all sort of buildings, museums, centers, and more throughout the five boroughs. We’re going to focus on Western Queens—Astoria, LIC, and Sunnyside—which have some great options. Lots of really interesting things going on. And be sure to stop by Welling Court to see the OHNY-commissioned mural (pictured above).

Saturday and Sunday – Tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. with neighborhood organizers and Ad Hoc’s co-founders will highlight pieces created by legends of the graffiti and street art movements, as well as the up-and-coming talents and discuss the impact on the neighborhood. Some artists will be on site to discuss their work. (45 minutes)

Composting Underneath the Queensboro Bridge

Tours at 12:30 p.m. & 2:30 p.m. with Program Manager Gina Baldwin will include a comprehensive discussion about urban composting using aerated static pile (ASP) methods, and will illustrate why composting is integral to NYC’s green infrastructure.

Tour at 10:30 a.m. with Gil Lopez, Ranch co-founder and permaculture/landscape designer, will discuss the founding of the Ranch in 2011, the history of the abandoned Degnon Terminal MTA/LIRR rail spur that the Ranch now inhabits, and the bioremediation and permaculture practices at the Ranch. The farming practices and social impacts that Smiling HogsHead has on its community will also be explored.
