Monday we had the good fortune to stop by and chat with Denis Lee of Astoria Coffee on all things opening. Their new space, though not quite finished, was bright, airy, and full of unique touches. We can’t wait for their full opening Monday, August 18th (get the full details below). Stop by from 7am to 8pm to try their rotating selections of coffee, pastries from Ceci Cela, and tea from UK based Tea Pigs. Also be on the look out for their house iced barley tea, a traditional Japanese beverage. My iced coffee with locally sourced milk. In the future, they’ll also have a nut milk for those who prefer coffee sans dairy. Let’s talk a little more about the coffee. Here’s a little bit more from owner Denis: We’re featuring roasters from all over the country on a rotating basis. There is a lot of variety in coffee in terms of sourcing and roast profiles and styles, and we want to highlight this variety and range. Also with the prevalence of some of the big name-brand coffees like Counter Culture, Intelligentsia, Stumptown and the like, we wanted to offer something different that is harder to find/unavailable in New York. We take a lot of care on coffee preparation but our primary goal is to be viewed as a hospitality business, so in that way we like to feature the work of the roasters and put the spotlight on them. We like to think of it as a gallery approach to food/drink. To start things off, we’ll sell whole bean/serve coffee from Case Coffee (Ashland, OR casecoffeeroasters.com), Deeper Roots Coffee (Cincinnati, OH deeperrootscoffee.com), and Commonwealth Coffee (Denver, CO commonwealthcoffee.co). Here’s a little more info on what they plan to do with their space: The plan is to have regular events in here, we’d especially like regular live music. Stuff that is low key, solo/duo/trios. We’ll also feature local art on a rotating basis, maybe every month or every other month. Our goal is to kick off each new artist with an opening party. Here’s a rundown of some of their plans for this weekend: Astoria Coffee social media followers will get a sneak peek today (Thursday 8/14). Drinks will be $1 off, and they’ll be hosting a Tweet Up from 7PM-10PM, so the twitter community in Astoria can meet face to face and celebrate a bit. Sounds like fun! Saturday from 12-3 they’ll conduct a public tasting free of charge with the folks from Deeper Roots Coffee. Their official opening for the general public starts Monday, 8/18.
