Yesterday we stopped by Tacuba, a new Mexican restaurant opening up in the old 5 Napkin Burger space. Yes, that’s its name—Tacuba—which refers to the name of a section in northwest Mexico City. It’s NOT going to be called Toloache as first reported, though Tacuba is from Chef/Owner Julian Medina of Toloache fame, as well as his partner Louis Skibar. It is scheduled to open in August.

As you can imagine, the place is still a construction mess, with a month to go before opening. They’ve stripped down the bar and removed the meathooks.

The meathooks from 5 Napkin are all gone.

We noticed a new fixture is being built. We wonder if perhaps this is a takeout station? Or maybe a bar station for staff? There is a door back there which would make it easy to pop in and pick up your order. Perhaps to go orders will be processed there. Who knows!

Is that a display case in the left part of the fixture?

We reached out to Tacuba’s publicist and learned these additional details:

Tacuba will be a cantina inspired Mexican restaurant from Chef/Owner Julian Medina and partner Louis Skibar opening in August. The menu is a work in progress but patrons can expect the authentic Mexican cuisine Medina has become known for along with a mix of new dishes, flavor profiles and inspirations. There will be a large collection of tequila and mezcal along with a variety of margaritas, signature cocktails and punch bowls. Tacuba will also feature a DJ on weekends going it’ll 4am.

We’re definitely curious, and as Mexican food fans, we can’t wait to eat here! We’ll keep you updated on the progress.
