Kaufman Astoria Studios is undergoing quite the renovation. The upcoming changes include closing 36th Street between 34th Avenue and 35th Avenue and building a luxury hotel! From the NY Daily News: Kaufman Astoria Studios, where “Sesame Street” is filmed, plans to open the city’s only state-of-the-art outdoor movie set this summer on 36th St., between 34th and 35th Aves. The stage, where car chases can soon be filmed without film crews occupying entire city blocks, is expected to attract more movie and TV productions to the area. The studio is also looking into the feasibility of building a luxury hotel, complete with a top-notch restaurant, on an empty parking lot on 36th St., studio officials told the Daily News. It is also considering erecting condominiums or rental apartments in the vicinity as well.
