Have you been enjoying the brand new Astoria Park Track and Field? Well, get ready for more updated Park features. The next reconstruction project includes the Charybdis Playground, located near Astoria Pool, and the adjacent “comfort station” (restroom and drinking fountains).

Restoring the Track and Field was phase one of Astoria Park’s participation in the “Anchor Parks” project, during which the NYC Parks Department is investing $150 million into five destination parks across the city to make the old parks new again.

The second phase will update Charybdis Playground with new asphalt pathways, additional plantings and the construction of a spray shower.

$9.3 million of the funding is from the Mayor, and the remaining $3.3 million comes from City Council.

According to the NYC Parks website, construction on the playground was set to begin in September and is anticipated to be completed by March 2021.

Reconstructing the comfort station is a separate project, with all $2.4 million coming from mayoral funding. Construction for this project is set to begin in February 2020, and will be completed in August 2021.
