There’s so much going on in the neighborhood (especially closings, unfortunately)! Here’s the latest (as usual, let us know if we missed anything or if you have any further insights):

OPENINGS

Calexico

We’ve confirmed that Calexico—the Mexican/California hybrid eatery that started as a street cart and has since expanded throughout NYC, Detroit and Bahrain—is taking over the old Salt & Bone building on 30th Ave. They’ve told us “it probably won’t open until the end of the year,” so hopefully we’ll have more updates come fall!

32-10 30th Ave, Astoria

Biskoti Bakery

Another bakery is on 30th Ave – in the old Flo space. It’s called Biskoti, and this seems to be a second location after a shop in Merrick, Long Island. Check out some of the delicious-looking baked good here, and let us know if you stop by. Since it was a restaurant space, it seems to have ample seating – indoors and outdoors.

37-20 30th Ave, Astoria

FoodStruck

This tiny space on 35th St has housed many random businesses (most recently a crepe shop), but its latest tenant is catering specifically to the late night munchies. Though hours vary now (check social), it’s mostly opening from late night to the wee hours of the morning. With menu items like fried chicken thigh sandwiches, grilled cheese with onion marmalade, and five-spice pork belly with fried egg over jasmine rice–you know where to go when those 2 a.m. cravings hit.

Four Winters

This London-based ice cream shop opened its first U.S. East Coast location a few weeks ago right here in LIC. It’s known for using liquid nitrogen to make its hand-churned ice creams, and current flavors (which are updated monthly) are: birthday cake, lemon berry cloud, mango chilli sorbet, strawberries and cream, and vegan chocolate peanut butter. Just make sure you check their Instagram before you go, because they will sell out!

“The Spot”

A new place called “The Spot” seems to be taking over Dandana Hookah Lounge on Broadway. We received this tip from a reader and can’t find much other info, so let us know if you hear anything!

42-21 Broadway, Astoria

CTown Fresh

Apparently opening on 24th Ave and 32nd St – can never have too many grocery stores!

RUMORS

Rivercrest

Though it’s been a long time coming, management says that they are just waiting on a liquor license, and expect to be open at the end of this month/beginning of next!

33-15 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria

McCann’s

Interesting signage is up at McCann’s on Ditmars, under new management? The message on their machine just confirms that they are currently closed and under new management, but doesn’t say when they will be opening back up.

3615 Ditmars Blvd, Long Island City

Euro Market
Euro Market under the 30th Ave train has had continuous issues over the past few years, so it’s not especially surprising that the above sign appeared on their windows last week. No one has been answering the phone there either…
30-42 31st St, Astoria

CLOSINGS

Credit to Higher Grounds.

This CBD-friendly coffee shop had customers freaking out when it appeared closed, and someone (I assume connected to the owners?) broke the social media silence on Instagram here. They explained that it won’t reopen until October 1, under new ownership. Not sure the full story, but everyone seemed pretty shocked.
25-11 Astoria Blvd, Astoria

Credit to Loose Leaf.

A few rapid-fire closing announcements based on reader insights, which we don’t have additional insight on:
  • 33 French Cleaners Inc: 3327 Crescent St, Astoria
  • Loose Leaf Tea: 28-10 23rd Ave, Long Island City (closed through mid-August, with papers over the windows)
  • Matsu Sushi: 3411 30th Ave, Astoria (the Yelp page reflects this as well)
  • El Boqueron: 31-01 34th Ave, Astoria (under the train on 34th Ave, seems to be closed with something new opening up)

French cleaners on 31st have the RUDEST owners. Good riddance even tho this appears to be a different location.

Rio Grande, the Brazilian lunch counter/steakhouse place on Broadway, moved effective 8/26 to the Rio supermarket on 36th.
