In late July I noticed some movement in the space just to the east of 23rd Avenue mainstay, The Bonnie, and was definitely curious. Some background on the location: it was Stamatis for a long time (then they moved across the street) and for a short time (thank goodness) it was home to the creepy Lovely Pupsy pet store. After they left, the front would gather leaves and garbage every year, and was generally looking like a disgrace.

So I was glad to see that changes were afoot—and they are in the form of 4fold Organic Cafe and Crepe.

Yes, you read that right—CREPES. This further supports my theory of the “crepe invasion” of Astoria (see Bother Crepe, T-Swirl Crepe, and Cafe LeFrape; sadly, Locus closed earlier this year). We’ve reached out to the owners to get more info on the business, but here is what they have to say on their Facebook page:

  • Food: New American, Greek and Mediterranean, vegetarian, organic, gluten-free
  • Serving: breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, coffee
  • Decor: casual with reclaimed wood, exposed brick
  • Hours: Sunday-Thursday, 6am-10pm; Friday and Saturday, 6am-11pm

There are indications that they’ll have outdoor seating, too.

While crepes are new to 23rd Ave, coffee is not—you’ve got great cold brew at NYC Bagel Coffee House, yum lattes at Coffee Pot, and fab frappes at To Laiko, plus the espresso offered at Ornella, so here’s hoping they bring their A game on the coffee front. There’s really no excuse for bad coffee in Astoria anymore. Apart from that, we hope 4fold brings something unique and delicious to this hot strip of 23rd Ave.
