Musicians take to the streets for Make Music New York

Today, June 21, over 1,000 musicians will take to the streets of New York City to participate in Make Music New York: a free, city-wide outdoor music festival across all five boroughs. Astoria is representing with shows all day long at a variety of different venues, and including a wide range of genres. To help you navigate your way, we’re here to highlight four events you should check out:

Athens Square Park

From 1pm-8pm, Athens Square Park will be hosting live performances ranging from the hip-hop sounds of Al Qually to the singer-songwriter vibes of Qismat. There’s also an Open Mic happening, so don’t be afraid to head over the the corner of 30th Ave and 30th Street to check out the scene if you’d like to perform!

 

Fatty’s Bar and Restaurant

Fatty’s is getting involved in MMNY in a big way: from 11:30am-6:00pm, folks can enjoy performances by Fatty’s Locals,”an ensemble of musicians drafted especially for Make Music New York.” Once this crew is done, the bar/restaurant will be hosting M. Nero Nava from 6:00pm-6:45pm, and the Nervous Breakdowns from 7:00pm-8:45pm at their beloved spot on 28th Ave between 45th and 46th Street.

 

The Sparrow Tavern

The folks at The Sparrow Tavern are always great hosts for MMNY, and they aren’t afraid to mix up the genres. They be welcoming experimental jazz-rock artists All The Madmen from 6:45pm-8:00pm, and local rockers Sweet Magma from 8:00pm-9:00pm. (While you’re there, grab their veggie burger. One of the best in Astoria!)

The Sparrow Tavern is located at 24-01 29th Street, right across from the Bohemian Beer Garden!

Snowdonia

Last but not least, Snowdonia will be kicking things off early in the afternoon, with a lunchtime solo acoustic set from Desmond McManus of Saint Rocco from 12:45pm-2:45pm. Expect a mix of originals and covers, spanning from classic rock and R&B to 90s favorites. Later on in the day, Snowdonia will host indie-rockers Supermajor from 6:00pm-7:00pm.

Snowdonia is located at 34-55 32nd St.
