This Friday I’ll celebrate 5 years living in Astoria. I moved here right after college and never looked back. Having lived in multiple apartments in different areas, and can I appreciate the different nooks and crannies Astoria has to offer.

About 3 years ago I started working on my passion project full time, FindSpark – a community dedicated to the career success of millennials. I’ve met hundreds of amazing people through FindSpark, some of which have become my closest friends.

One of those friends is Nick Hoefly, an animator and founder of Wonderbot Studios, a local animation studio based in Astoria. We bonded quickly when we found out we both lived in Astoria — and since then I’ve been close friends with him and his wife.

We’re both obsessed with Astoria, and about a year ago realized that there weren’t really any great meet ups or gatherings for folks in creative fields or who enjoy creative things to get together and hang out. With the goal of having an excuse to meet new people and leave Astoria as little as possible, we launched Astoria Creatives Meetup.
First Astoria Meetup

We’ve hosted casual monthly events for the past year at different local venues like The Strand, Astoria Coffee, and Q.E.D.

Our meetups are really informal, with the most structured thing we do being name tags. As organizers, Nick and I make sure people meet, start conversations, and have a good time.

Both Nick and I at one point (he still does) lived and worked in Astoria. We know first hand that working all alone in coffee shops or in our apartments can get lonely and borderline depressing. We wanted to give folks a fun reason to go out and connect.

That’s what we’ve been doing, and I hope you’ll join us.

We have an event this Friday at Astoria Coffee. Details and RSVP here: facebook.com/events/505548302925944/
