We’ve heard from the folks at Bareburger about their new restaurant, opening up in the old Athens Cafe space, called Burnside Biscuits. They plan to open in June and offer fried chicken, biscuit sandwiches, and wood-fired veggies made from fresh, local, sustainable, and organic ingredients (whenever possible). On the drinks side, look for local beer and wine on tap and classic Southern-inspired cocktails. You can also “kick back and listen to ‘Fat’ Blues playing on vinyl” while you’re there.

More about the restaurant’s name origins:

Burnside Biscuits’ name takes its inspiration from General Burnside, a northern man who found himself in the South during the Civil War. Burnside took what he learned of southern tradition and brought it back to the people he loved.

And about the vibe, according to General Manager Tommy Sardo:

Our vision is a buzzing patio and a porch-style waiting area where guests can start their night, end their night, or make it their whole night. We hear Howlin’ Wolf’s ‘Smokestack Lightning’ playing on vinyl, the comforting smell of freshly baked biscuits and fried chicken from an open kitchen, bartenders crushing ice and shaking drinks, and warm smiles welcoming new guests. We want to take the old Athens Cafe block and turn it into our own Burnside Biscuits Block Party.

Their online presence isn’t much, just a Facebook page right now. No doubt that will change soon. Burnside Biscuits will be located at 32-07 30th Avenue in Astoria.

Not very happy doesn’t sound like out local spot will be #glutenfree friendly. Husband and I will be super disappointed if they don’t make a good gf menu. At least Athens had amazing coffee, drinks, and some gf options. It was the staple of our neighborhood. Going to hate having a nice new place that we have to walk bye and not go to…. fingers crossed they surprise us with lots of yummy #glutenfree options!!!!!!!!

Agreed, plus vegan options. Loved sitting at Athens Café with the dog; they would always make me yummy veggies and wine. Please “Biscuit” place, make veggies, not bread.

Sooooo disappointed. Biscuits? Fried chicken? Just what Astoria needs–NOT! Another Bareburger would have been preferable. At least they have veggie burgers. What can a vegetarian get here? Wood fired veggies. Oh God….
