As you no doubt know, over the past year there have been some pretty ghastly things happening to the feral/stray cats in Astoria. The website Astoria 7 has been on the forefront of spreading information and awareness about the cats, and on Sunday, October 19 they are coming out and tabling in the Ditmars area by the Starbucks on 31st Street/Ditmars. From the event posting:

October 16th is National Feral Cat Day. Astoria7, with the help of Roberto Bonelli (thank you Roberto!), is planning a community outreach on Sunday, October 19th. We will have a table with flyers and materials about TNR, as well as flyers about NYC’s missing cats (which people can also take to post around the Astoria neighborhood). Please stop by and pick up materials and find out how you can help to reduce the feral cat population, and advocate for better protection of this vulnerable little animal.

They’ll be out there from 1 to 3 p.m.

I live in a large complex near Astoria. People are constantly dumping cats off here. I took in 2 of them. Now I have 4 cats. Last year I was notified of 4 newborn kittens. They were left in a plastic bag full of water under a car tire. The 2 cats I took in were adults that were dumped off. 6 years ago I took in a kitten whose eyes were not even open yet. It was left in the elevator. It’s not the cats fault they’re out there. There should be a bounty on the cruel people who abandon the helpless cats.
