A sort of “build a bear” teddy bear-building shop is opening next month in Astoria—Teddy Mountain will open up in the Ditmars area at 29-21 21st Ave. That location is across from the beloved Family Corner and next door to the Federation of Italian American Organizations headquarters. We also wonder if it might have been the rumored location of Waltz-Astoria before they headed south in the neighborhood.

Here’s the basic concept of the place, from their website:

Teddy Mountain® is a magical and special teddy bear stuffing store that will provide a lasting and memorable experience for all. The concept is simple: pick an unstuffed plush (unstuffed teddy bear or other animal skin) and fill it up yourself using our child-safe stuffing machine. You can then customize your teddy bear to your liking by picking out clothing and accessories such as shoes, sunglasses, and even sporting gear.

Apart from simply building your own custom teddy bear/plush animal, Teddy Mountain offers more robust experiences: “Teddy Mountain of Astoria is brand new store that will feature children enjoying the teddy bear building experience. Also will host birthday parties, Mommy & Me weekly events.”

They are also hiring, “looking for energetic, enthusastic, helpful, diverse and team oriented individuals who want to be a part of enriching kids daily lives.” Send your resume to teddymountainofastoria@gmail.com if you’re interested.

Here’s a video of what they are all about, complete with a cheerful, ear-worm of a jingle:

Teddy Mountain, 29-21 21st Ave, Astoria, NY, 11105, teddymountain.com, Facebook

I agree with Meredith that this seems like a bizarre place for such a store. Then again, the party space seemed to stay in business just fine in that same spot, and I’m sure they only left because the landlord took back the lease. So maybe it’s not such a bad business idea?

Check out their list of locations – they’ve got quite an international presence, from Kazakhstan to Ireland to Australia! Pretty terrible website, though.

teddy mountain will be in the space once occupied by the italian federation as well as the space next door that used to be a party place for kids…both storefronts were rehabed over the last few months, and teddy mountain will be renting both…the italian federation moved to a new location on 21st ave between 21st and 23rd street…

This seems like a really weird store to put in Astoria generally, much less in that location.
