As we’ve mentioned before, Astoria Park Pool is home to the adult lap swim program each summer, and it’s awesome. Now that the season is almost over, we’ve learned that Astoria Pool swimmers triumphed in more ways than one, including winning some relay trophies and distance swimming trophies. So excellent!

During the lap swim program there are always competitions running—pools compete city-wide to swim the most miles, and swimmers within a pool compete to swim the most miles, too. There’s also a goal for individuals to swim 25 miles. When you swim 25 miles, you get an invite to the city-wide pool party and a tshirt. And last night was that party.

During the party there is a relay competition, and the Astoria Pool did well! The early bird swimmers won first prize and the night owl swimmers won third prize! Gary Weeks, an Astorian who swims both early and late at Astoria Pool, won the men’s trophy for the most miles swum—129.5—of any pool in the city. Bravo!

We also got the mileage numbers for the season, and Astoria Pool ruled as well—swimmers here swam the most mileage of any pool in the city. For early birds, the total miles swum throughout the city was 9,298 and Astoria Pool swam a total of 1,911. That’s about 20%. Night owls were even more impressive, swimming 1,368 miles out of 5,572 city-wide miles. That’s about 25%! Astoria swimmers seriously go the distance.

So congratulations, Astoria swimmers! You make us proud! Here’s to what has really been an amazing summer in the water.

No permit needed, but it’s not as simple as that. For lap swimming – which ends tomorrow – you needed to register ahead of time. For open swim during the rest of the day, you need a strong lock. They are really strict about this sort of thing, too.
