A WHA reader passed on this update regarding Astoria Heights Playground posted in the Friends of Astoria Heights Park Facebook group:

Councilman Costantinides called last night to give us the great news that he and Borough President Melinda Katz have pushed through 1.2 million plus monies from Ms Katz additionally (500,000) for a playground renovation. Now if this is not reason celebrate, I don’t know what is! Thank you Costa and team and our Borough Presisdent Katz for making this a reality so soon.

This will be a process not an immediate renovation. Could take easily 2 years, which is normal.

Our source tells us that the place definitely needs help, and says that the Friends of Astoria Heights Park group “has done an epic amount of work in a short time in trying to make the park better and safer for our kids.” In the photo above you can see the new plantings and retaining wall (dirt had been sliding onto the playground). Also, look for a new mural that will be painted behind the swings.

Congrats to all involved with the upkeep of the Astoria Heights Playground, and especially Lynn Kennedy, who is well-respected as a leader in getting things done there.
