While examining various corners of the world wide web, I came across this amazing map called TRAVIC, which stands for Transit Visualization Client. It basically tracks transit in real time as it pertains to published schedules. So it’s not at the moment real-time, but it’s incredibly cool nonetheless. Here’s a description from TRAVIC’s creators:

This tracker provides movement visualization of transit data published by transit agencies and operators from all over the world. The movements are mostly based on static schedule data. Whenever real-time data is available it is also included in the visualization.

Legit real time display is in SF and the Netherlands. According to the creators, in NYC the data is “99% static schedule data and 1% real-time data.” But this is still very, very interesting. You can watch the trains and buses move as they are scheduled to. So, it can give you some idea of where things are supposed to be compared to the way things are. And if and when the city produces real time data for transit, this map will be a truly amazing tool for NYers.
