Today, via BORO and the Queens Courier, we learned that the LIC Flea & Food is expanding… to Astoria! Aptly called the Astoria Flea & Food, it will take place on the Kaufman Astoria Studios backlot—that de-mapped block of 36th Street between 34th and 35th Avenues. It launches Sunday, May 4, and will be present for eight consecutive weekends. and will feature a lot of the same sort of things the LIC Flea does—jewelry, art, crafts, clothes, antiques, and of course the food vendors.

The Queens Courier article has lots of quotes from local business people and elected officials, who are pretty keen on this new venture. People are pretty excited about the area blossoming as it has, and the Flea seems like it could be a good fit. The Flea is going to be used as a sort of business incubator, too: “Astoria Flea will work as a great setting for business owners to grow their businesses and gain prominence, even if they might not be ready to afford a storefront. The market will be within walking distance from the M, R, N and Q train lines.”

(As an aside: we know from “I got it on Steinway” that the M does not run on weekends. Neither does the Q, come to think of it. But you can still take the N and R on the weekend. Anyway…)

One detail from the Courier article got us thinking:

In addition, Astoria Flea will allow visitors to have an experience within one of the city’s most historic film and television studios, first built in 1920, which is currently home to shows such as “Orange is the New Black,” “Nurse Jackie,” “Alpha House” and “Sesame Street.”

Wouldn’t it be great if Kaufman gave studio tours on those Flea weekends? That would be pretty awesome.

Well, we look forward to checking it out for sure. Welcome to Astoria, Astoria Flea & Food! Check them out on Twitter and Facebook for more info. And how about you—will you stop by the Astoria Flea this spring?

Tours of the studios would be AMAZING! It’s been on my bucket list to see the “Sesame Street” set since moving to NYC 17 years ago. :)
