Meg Hearts Caramel Slices at The Thirsty Koala

The Thirsty Koala is home to caramel squares, an Australian dessert made up of a cookie base, caramel filling, and chocolate topping. One of the best desserts in Astoria!

About a week ago, I met up with some friends at The Thirsty Koala, Astoria’s own Australian restaurant up on Ditmars. I’ve had tasty food there in the past, but I was unprepared for what awaited me there that evening for dessert – caramel slices.

What are caramel slices? They are an Australian dessert made up of, basically, a cookie crust, a caramel layer, and a top layer of dark chocolate. Sounds pretty simple, but the sum is a magical transformation of its individual parts. This is a perfect combination of flavors for me – sweet, salty, caramel, coconut, and chocolate. It’s wonderful.

It comes, as you can see, four pieces on a plate with some thick unsweetened whipped cream and a strawberry in the center. I love to dip the caramel squares into the whipped cream, which is a nice contrast both on a textural and sweetness level.

The caramel squares are made by local online bakery Waltzing Matilda’s NYC, whose specialty is Australian desserts.

This really has become one of my very favorite desserts in all Astoria. Highly recommended!
