It’s no surprise I’m a big fan of natural markets and organic produce peddlers, so I was thrilled to see that Greenbay Market on Broadway (formerly Y&Y Green Organic) has undergone a huge expansion. Take a look:

The formerly crowded market has now doubled in size. Expect to find a wide variety of prepared food, a large organic produce selection,  and a robust natural/organic foods section. Stock up on vitamins, specialty frozen goods, organic herbs & spices, specialty food items, quality coffee, and a dairy items. Their house made sushi is also a hit- freshly made and affordable. In fact, it’s hard to read a yelp review for this place without sushi being mentioned!

In addition to the glowing reviews, we’re also hearing that Greenbay is open 24/7, perfect for busy Astorians.

Vitality and Health near the R train has lower prices and a good selection, though a tad smaller. I am not sure that Green Bay knows about organic food. I recently read that there is really no such thing as organic fish, yet I bought some from green bay. The produce at green bay is very fresh and the workers very hard working and friendly, but watch those prices. You can do better on most items that are not produce.

Does anybody know if the grass fed meat in their new meat dept is really grass fed? The prices are really unbelievably low for grass fed meat which gives me that too-good-to-be-true kind of feeling. Also I just cooked up some of the ground beef, and the fat seems clear. Usually grass fed fat is kind of greenish. I wish I knew for sure.

I’m vegan and buy all of my food from this place! The selection is pretty awesome, and since they’ve expanded, they’ve brought in some freezers and now have all kinds of amazing vegan goodies I can pick up (e.g Daiya cheese, Boca burgers, etc). The produce is typically very fresh and is much better than you’d get from the other grocery stores in the neighborhood. You do have to watch what the cashier’s ring up though because they sometimes charge you for the wrong food item (e.g. charging you for green squash instead of cucumbers or vice versa) so you have to keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t overcharge you. If you can’t afford WholeFoods and/or have the patience to lug all your food from the city, definitely check out this place. All my food comes from there and only costs me about $60/wk. Highly recommend.

Love this spot, which is much better than the alternatives on Broadway. They’ve always lacked a proper meat section, which has kept it from a 1-stop spot, but the cashier told me they are adding an organic butcher when they complete the expansion. Win!

I actually do shop here somewhat frequently…the produce is quite good, fairly priced, and much better than my usual grocery (the C-Town on 29th and Broadway). Excited about the expansion, and will be going there more for my produce shopping when I do actually cook. Curious to see what new products and varieties they’ve added.

I haven’t been in a while but remember Y&Y having a decent gluten-free selection. I will have to check it out. Thanks!
