As some of you might have heard, Astoria is getting a bookstore! I’ll let that sink in for a second.

Now that you’ve had time to digest the great (awesome?) news, let me tell you some even better news- we’re giving away one of the very first Astoria Bookshop books, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, to one lucky We Heart Astoria reader!

Here’s more:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a longtime favorite of ours here at the Astoria Bookshop. Since it was first published in 1999, it has frequently appeared on the American Library Association’s annual top 10 list of most “challenged” books — which means that some people think it should be banned from their library or school’s bookshelves. (It’s also just been turned into a movie.)

We at the Bookshop don’t really care for censorship of any kind, so in honor of Banned Books Week, we’re giving away this wonderful, difficult, heartbreaking story.

Feel free to share the contest with your friends (they just have to like us to be eligible). And if you tweet about it with the hashtag #PerksInAstoria, we’ll give you a bonus entry.
TO WIN: Like Astoria Bookshop on Facebook and then leave us a comment telling us why you’re so excited for a bookstore to be entered to win! Extra entries if you tweet about the contest using the hashtag #PerksInAstoria. The contest will run Monday through Thursday at midnight. The winner will be announced here on We Heart Astoria and on our Facebook page.

I’m excited because I love Astoria and books, plus it would be amazing since we’re reading this for my book club next month!

Of course I am excited about a bookstore opening in Astoria. It enriches the life and culture of the neighborhood. It will be my favorite place to spend my weekend.

Bookstores help define a community while their books allow us escape from that same environment. Both are critical.

I’m excited for a bookstore because I like to shop local, and books are something I buy a lot of!
