With a lovely, mild weekend up ahead, there’s definitely an opportunity to get your last minute summer fix. There’s a rich amount of stuff going on from the usual eating and drinking, sports, and even an awesome group bike ride too. Hope you have some fun in the sun!
Get Ready for the Open!
I know I’m not the only one who’s super excited about the U.S. Open that’s officially starting this Monday at Flushing Meadows, Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. While the actual tournament starts next week, the U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament has been going on all week and wraps up tomorrow. I’ll be there with some of my best tennis buddies, so if you’re around, hop on the 7 to Mets Willets Point, and enjoy the whole day outside in this awesome sports arena. The action starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes on all day. Directions to the arena.
On Your Way Back from Tennis, Get Some Nixtamal
Meg and I actually tried this the last time we came from the U.S. Open and it was an awesome treat. If you’re taking the 7 train , just get off at the 103rd Street stop and walk a few blocks to 47th Avenue. There, you’ll find a little piece of Mexican food heaven that we call Nixtamal. You can indulge in their homemade tortillas, which are used in their legendary tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas and more. I highly recommend the tamales, and if they have it, their ever so moist and milky tres leches cake. Tortilleria Nixtamal (104-05 47th Avenue, Corona. 718.699.2434)
A Bike Tour Through Western Queens
Do you want to do something totally different and active this weekend–and bring the kiddies along with you?! Our friends at Recycle-a-Bicycle and the Green Spokes Ride Club will be hosting a ride through Western Queens this Saturday and visiting Build It Green! NYC for a special tour. Participants will get a sneak peek of what happens to buildings and their contents when they get demolished…and maybe find some hidden treasures along the way. Meet at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday at the SE corner of 5th Street and 45th Avenue in LIC. Find out more on Recycle-a-Bicycle’s Facebook page.
Sophisticated Snacks and Wine
Mackenzi and I recently spent some time in this awesome but sometimes forgotten wine bar on 37th Street and Broadway. On a lovely night, it’s great to sit outside and enjoy a few glasses of vino and munch on their super tasty and somewhat fancy snacks. The wild mushroom crostini (pictured above) made a big impression on me, packing a powerful punch of earthy flavor and amazing aromatics from their liberal use of truffle oil. The red wine is spectacular, and I particularly recommend the Moltepulciano D’Abruzzo Masciarelly Chieti – wow it goes down easy! Winegasm (31-86 37th Street, Astoria. 718.932.3331)
Stroll Down Newtown Ave – To Your Heart’s Content!
You may have heard, but this Saturday, DOT is conducting a really awesome experiment at the intersection of Newtown Avenue and 30th Avenue. A pretty pedestrian plaza will be set up in this corner block all day from 7:00 a.m. to midnight, and you’ll have plenty of tables with chairs and umbrellas to pop a squat and bring some friends along with you. After you enjoy, talk with some of the folks from DOT who’ll be on site to answer any questions, about their future plans for this part of the nabe. Find out more on their Facebook page.
