What a week! I’m a firm believer in the power of MIR, so as to be expected, it’s been a doozy. To keep my life sane and orderly, I rely on a handful of local businesses to keep things running smoothly. From little luxuries like tattoos to everyday must-haves like laundry, here’s a list of 5 local shops & services that define Astoria my way!
Vitality Health Natural Market (46-03 Broadway, Astoria)
At the very top of my weekly support shops is this amazing health food store on Broadway, Vitality Health. In addition to stocking my favorite line of all natural vitamins, they have a well stocked juice bar, vegan friendly deli counter, hot food bar and a large selection of typical health food sundries and supplements. The staff knows me by name, stocks items just for me, and makes the tastiest to-go veggie burger in all of Astoria. WHA Tip: Look for a massive expansion of Vitality Health this fall including 1000′s of extra square feet, a large dine-in cafe and more healthful living products.
Supernova Tattoo (38-01 23rd Avenue, Astoria)
Part of my ongoing creative expression is tattoing. Christian at Supernova recently worked with me to transform a collection of photos and line drawings into my very favorite tattoo ever. Their new location is bright, clean and spacious. Don’t discount them just because they’re in Queens; the work they produce is as good as any shop in Brooklyn or Manhattan. I’ll be back next year to add a crafty tattoo inspired by my mother!
Vardiman Eyewear (34-18 Broadway, Astoria)
I’m blind as a bat, folks so when I need yet another box of contacts or some nerd-chic frames I always turn to Vardiman. The staff is friendly, attentive, and best yet personal. They remember my name and preferences each time I pop in, and I really appreciate that level of service. Above are my new Oliver Peoples that I picked up last week.
City Vet (45-44 Vernon Blvd, LIC)
That little guy up there is Oscar Wilde, one of three rescue cats that my girlfriend and I are lucky to have. When Oscar, and his sister Gertrude Stein were found in the alley next door to SITE, they were sick and full of fleas and mites. Dr. Adams got them fixed up in no time. In addition, their clean and well designed office space appeals to my taste and always makes me smile.

Mr. Laundree (32-02 34th Avenue, Astoria)
Sure, laundry is totally boring and specific to what area you live in, but for those of us near 34th Ave./Broadway, Mr. Laundree is where it’s at. Their big, clean facilities inspire confidence and their drop off service comes with free delivery and natural/organic detergents for just a bit more. It’s all about the little things, right?
