A little while back on Facebook, we announced the arrival of Plovgh in Queens - in Long Island City, specifically. It’s a very exciting development, and one we here at WHA are pretty happy about.
Now, what is Plovgh (pronounced “plow”)? Well, it is:
“…an online marketplace that coordinates the purchase and distribution of harvest from farms to individuals. It’s a way for people to get their food directly from farms, right in their neighborhood. We aim to make farming more profitable for farmers and food from farms available to more people.”
The way Plovgh has been operating so far, they are something between a CSA and a farmer’s market. You get to enjoy the season’s bounty without having to purchase an entire season. Everything is ordered a la carte. A farm share option is starting with Partners Trace Farm. More on that later.
Here is a smattering of what is available this week, from the different farms Plovgh works with:
- Pea Shoots: 1/4 lb – $3.00
- Adirondack red potatoes: $6.25/3 lb bag
- Red cabbage: $3.75/head
- Apple cider: $3.50/quart
- Pork, bacon, and sausage: $9.00-$11.00
- Maple syrup and honey: $6.00-20.00
- Yellow popping corn: $3.00/2 lb bag
So how do you get in on this awesomeness? Register an account on their website, and you’ll receive an email each Wednesday with the week’s offerings. You have until 24 hours prior to your chosen pickup time to place your order.
When Plovgh first established their distribution in Long Island City, the timing was smack dab in the middle of the afternoon – not great for working folks. This week they changed the distribution time to 5:30-6:30pm. Starting Monday, February 20, they’ll be experimenting with distribution on Mondays, again from 5:30-6:30pm.
Distribution is at the LIC YMCA, 32-23 Queens Blvd (map).
Also on Monday, February 20, join Partners Trace Farm, Plovgh, and Huckleberry Bar for A Farmer’s Happy Hour. The fun lasts from 6-8 pm at Huckleberry Bar. From the blog post invite:
Meet Partners Trace Farm’s Amoreen and Tierney, two of the people who feed your neighborhood. See what they’re growing this season. Have a taste of their pickles. Hear about their new approach to making sure you get the best of their harvest. Find a Plovgh Pickup Point near you. Have a drink. And get your Plovgh order for the week while you’re at it. Raffle will include Plovgh gift certificates and a spot at the May field dinner on the farm.
This sounds very cool, and you’ll get more information on the farm share element Plovgh is starting up.
So, if you want to give them a try – and I recommend that you seriously consider it – head over to the Plovgh website and click the Create an account link.
Enjoy!
