Happy almost Halloween Astoria! We heart this holiday in different ways and each of us here at WHA rings it in on her own terms.  I’ll be in full costume (Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction) getting my $5 milkshake on.  For those of you who haven’t seen this amazing flick, you totally have to!

But I digress… Here’s our list of some of the fun happs that are going on in the nabe.  For additional ones, you can also check out my Fooditka Halloween round-up that specifically focuses on food, and Meg’s amazing WTDTW. Enjoy and be safe out there.

Ovelia –  One of many WHA favorites, Ovelia is hosting a Halloween masquerade ball this Saturday starting at 11 p.m. Best costume gets awarded with a handsome prize so make sure to get creative.  Our tip is to come early and enjoy a tasty Greek dinner with specialties such as sesame encrusted feta cubes, moussaka, hand-grated zucchini croquettes, sizzling saganaki and more.  34-01 30th Avenue, 718.721.7217

Malu –  A wonderful place to get a delicious serving of ice cream, Malu is serving up a scoop of Halloween awesomeness to the kids.  Come by in costume this Saturday and get a free topping.  On Sunday, bring the kids over for a cookie decorating workshop – it’ll only set you back $10 and there are three time slots (3:00 – 3:30 p.m., 3:45 – 4:15 p.m., and 4:30 – 5:00 p.m.).  Space is running low so make your reservation soon at  12-09 Jackson Avenue, Astoria.  718.729.6258

Moustache Contest

The Queens Kickshaw – Call it a different kind of Halloween, call it crazy, call it wonderful, but in the spirit of fun and celebration, the awesome folks at The Queens Kickshaw are having a Best Fake or Real Moustache contest.  Taking place all day Saturday (in two waves), winners will be rewarded handsomely with cash and moustache themed goodies.  And yes, it’s in the spirit of Halloween and the upcoming Movember.  Way to be different, guys!  40-17 Broadway, Astoria.  718.777.0913

SHI – If you’re in the mood for something fancy shmancy, stop on in at SHI in LIC for their Saturday night Halloween bash.  Not only is this place a fabulous Asian fusion restaurant and bar, it has some of the best views of the city.  Make sure to wear your costumes, as the most creative ones will enjoy fun prizes.  47-20 Center Blvd, LIC.  347.242.2450

Halloween Walking Tour –  Not an night owl?  No worries – join the Greater Astoria Historical Society for a Halloween Walking Tour on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Exploring the eerie places of Astoria and LIC, the tour starts under the Hell Gate Bridge, continues on to Astoria Park and ends at Socrates Sculpture Park.  Cameras are encouraged! $15 general admission or $10 for GAHS members.

Hell Gate Social – Besides their big “Lost in Space” party on Saturday night, Sunday will also be an interesting time to check out their Night of the Living Sunday Night Cinema.  You can enjoy classic Halloween flicks on their giant outdoor projection screen. And get some cheap drinks while you’re there, snuggled up while watching Halloween and Polterguist.  12-21 Astoria Blvd, Astoria. 718.204.8313

Astor Bake Shop – Thinking of treating yourself to something sweet on Halloween or awarding some special (and creative costume) trick-or-treaters? Stop by at Astor Bake Shop to get your fix of Halloween themed desserts such as their gorgeously spooky cupcakes, chocolate treats and more.  Make sure to come by early, as these babies sell out.  12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.606.8439

Omonia and Omonia Next Door – And speaking of Halloween treats, there’s more where that came from at Omonia and Omonia Next Door where they’ll have Halloween themed cakes, cupcakes, pumpkin and apple pies and more.  Check out these yummies starting tomorrow and spruce up your Halloween party or surprise the kids.  32-20 Broadway, Astoria.  718.274.6650

Cafe Bar – Providing a fabulously low-key vibe, I started my Halloween shenanigans last year at Cafe Bar.  It was a great way to chillax before going off to the Beer Garden just a few blocks away.  This year, they’re having a party on Sunday night, complete with music, food, drinks and prizes.  Should be a great time.  32-90 36th Street, Astoria.  718.204.5273

Sunswick – Partying like rock stars, Saturday night will be the big night for Sunswick, with their signature haunted house, plenty of drinks specials, a costume contest and specialty concoctions such as a Witches Brew Beer.  The party officially starts at 9 p.m. so come by early to get the best spot in the house.  35-02 35th Street, Astoria.  718.752.0620
