Welcome to the first weekend of August! We’re really starting the downward slope towards fall and the new school year, if you can believe it. So, enjoy this part of summertime in Astoria.
You can start the weekend with the Noguchi Museum First Fridays at the Noguchi Museum (9-01 33rd Rd). From 5:30-8pm on Friday, pay what you want for admission and enjoy this amazing museum. There’s a cash bar as well. This is a great, affordable way to see one of the best museums in Queens.
The Rural Route Film Festival also starts this Friday at the Museum of the Moving Image (36-01 35th Ave). The Rural Route Film Festival “explores many interpretations of ‘rural,’ highlighting films that deal with people and places outside of the bustle of the city.” Films will also be screened at nearby Brooklyn Grange.
On Saturday, part 3 of Summah Days With AM&A is on. From 4-11:30pm that day, hang out at Athens Square Park (30th Street and 30th Ave) and listen to multiple local bands. When that’s done, head to the after party at the Astoria Brewhouse (28-50 31st St). These shows are fundraisers for the 4th Annual Astoria Music Now!, in August. $5 suggested donation funds Astoria Music Now! 2011.
The much awaited Astoria Park Shore Fest starts this weekend! On Sunday, August 7 (and 14th, and 21st) from 1-7 pm, stop by Shore Blvd along Astoria Park.Shore Blvd will be shut down to motorized traffic, so you can enjoy the shoreline without cars. The Steinway BID Steinway St Festival rounds off the weekend. On Sunday, from noon – 6pm, Steinway St between 28th and 34th Aves will also be shut down and replaced by vendors selling lemonade, meat on a stick, and tube socks, at this annual street fair. You’ll be in the vicinity of The Queens Kickshaw (Broadway and 41st St), too, so consider stopping in for a glass of their delicious cold brewed coffee.
