While, obviously, we really heart Astoria big time, from time to time it’s good to look beyond our borders. Here’s a few great spots just outside Astoria’s confines that are worth the trip!
Claret Wine Bar (46-02 Skillman, Sunnyside)

These days I find myself in Sunnyside more and more, and when I need dinner spot full of charm, I always turn to Claret. Pictured above, my favorite arugula salad (minus the meat, of course!) filled with tasty greens, apples, carrots, a dash of parm and a great balsamic dressing. When I’m in the mood, I pair it with their decadent truffle oil mac & cheese or one of their fantastic crispy pizzas. Of course, their wine and beer selection is fantastic too.
The Creek and The Cave (10-93 Jackson Ave. Long Island City)

Based on their website, you’d think that The Creek and The Cave was just a LIC bar, lounge and performance space- but it’s so much more. This restaurant/theater has a little something for everyone. I love their tacos, burritos and tasty margaritas, and their large outdoor patio is pretty fantastic, too. Check out their performance and theater events on their webpage before heading over and make it a dinner and art night!
5 Burro Cafe (72-05 Austin St. Forest Hills)

Next time you find yourself in Forrest Hills, be sure to save time and space for this amazing cafe! Sure, sure the waits at night are long, but the minute you taste their giant mugs of margaritas, you’ll be glad you waited. Try their Mexican inspired salads, burritos and platters- or better yet bring some friends and share bunches.
SriPraPhai (64-13 39th Ave, Woodside)
It’s hard to know where to start with this Queens Thai staple, but let’s start here: run, don’t walk. This is the place to get fresh, authentic Thai food served by people with the utmost passion and enthusiasm about the cuisine. Their nearly endless menu has all the favorite noodles, duck salads, soups and more that you would expect as well as new soon-to-be favorites (and a vegetarian menu, too!). Expect a bit of a wait, and bring cash.
