What To Do This Weekend, 8/5/10

We’re looking at a really nice weekend in the low 80′s, which makes it oh so pleasant and we might not even have to turn on the A/C. Can you imagine? So with that, there are plenty of awesome things to keep yourself busy with this weekend – from cool outdoor eating spots to museums, special events and so much more.

Thursday:
Check out Mojave, the Southwestern hot-spot with an awesome outdoor garden for an evening of classic rock & roll, with a concert that starts at 7 p.m. Feast on delicious food and ice cold margaritas while enjoying the tunes.  22-36 31st Street, Astoria. 718.545.4100

Friday:
Take advantage of the Noguchi Museum’s “First Fridays” program where admission is free, hours are extended and you can sip on a stiff drink (wine or beer) in their relaxing rock garden.  I think it’s one of the coolest, under-the-radar spots in our nabe!  Friday, August 6th from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. 9-01 33rd Road, Long Island City. 718.204.7088

Saturday:
The 8th Annual NYC Musical Saw Festival is going on at 2 p.m. at the Hellenic Cultural Center.  With over 30 saw players from all over the world (from as far as Japan and as near as Queens), this will be an afternoon of interesting, unusual and certainly unforgettable musical performances. Admission is $10.  27-09 Crescent Street, Astoria.  718.626.5111

Sunday:
Get ready for the 2nd Astoria Water Walk, where Shore Blvd is car-free and full of wonderful activities.  This week’s focus is on one of our favorite things, food, with a watermelon eating contest, a Queens Harvest Food Co-Op Salad throw-down, tastings from Seva, Astor Bake Shop, Bistro 33 and so much more. 1:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Look for more info on their Facebook page.

Anytime:
Since the weather will be pleasant, treat yourself to a nice brunch at Monika’s Cafe Bar or Ornella. Both offer outdoor seating as well as great deals.  At Cafe Bar, indulge in a complimentary mimosa or bloody mary with any brunch entree and at Ornella you can splurge with all-you-can-drink mimosas or bellinis for just $13 (and that includes an entree such as the awesome Nutella-topped pancakes pictured above). Monika’s Cafe Bar32-90 36th Street, Astoria. 718.204.5273. Ornella - 29-17 23rd Avenue, Astoria.  718.777.9477
