What’s better than a good old fashioned (and in some cases innovative), fluffy, stuffed-full-o-goodness sandwich? When you don’t feel like cooking and want to out eat out without spending big bucks, a sandwich is the perfect thing. Here’s a list of some of our faves that pack a punch in flavor and that will surely satisfy your hunger.
Sal, Kris & Charlie’s - Nicknamed the “Sandwich Kings of Astoria” these guys know how to get it done, packing their heros with lots and lots of fixins and some of the best-tasting cold cuts and cheeses. Whether you’re going to a ball game or having people at your place, we highly recommend their goods – especially the 6 foot hero in the American and Italian version. This ‘wich simply rocks! 33-12 23rd Avenue, Astoria. 718. 278.9240
Mojave - A bit unusual for a sandwich you might think? Well if you’re lunching here, a sandwich is the way to go. I personally recommend the Mojo Marinated Atlantic Salmon Sandwich, which contains flaky pieces of salmon and creamy slivers of avocado dressed with spicy chipotle aioli between thin sourdough bread. 22-36 31st Street, Astoria. 718.545.4100
Il Bambino – If Sal, Kris & Charlie’s are the “Sandwich Kings”, Il Bambino has to be the “Panini King” with 21 varieties of savory and 10 varieties of brunch paninis, some of which cotain eggs and others which are sweet. I can’t name a favorite because they’re all awesome but I’ve recently had the Piggy Got Back brunch panini with prosciutto, scrambled eggs, mozzarella and olive spread and it rocked my world! 34-08 31st Avenue, Astoria. 718.626.0087
Cranky’s Cafe - A relatively new cafe in LIC, it’s casual, modern but also cozy. Sandwiches are fresh, innovative and simply shouldn’t be missed. I think their secret lies in the delicious, quality bread they use and two sandwich varieties, which I’ve tried (and recommend) include The Clucker – a grilled chicken sandwich on a brioche bun – and The Cranky Reuben Panini with smoked turkey, red cole-slaw and gooey Swiss cheese. 48-19 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City. 347.738.4921
Othello’s Deli – A simple yet wonderful neighborhood deli, Othello can please all your sandwich needs, whether your’e in the mood for something cold or hot. In my household, we usually get the grilled chicken sandwich on a traditional kaiser roll or a chicken cutlet if we’re feeling indulgent. The cracked pepper turkey with a choice of cheese is awesome too. 27-05 24th Avenue, Astoria. 718.956.1337What’s your favorite sandwich Astoria?
