Welcome to another weekend of hot weather. It’s getting a little tiresome, though in a short time we’ll no doubt be complaining about the cold. To keep your mind off the heat, take some time to relax at Astoria Park for Astoria Music Now, an all-day festival of local music right in the Park. The event is free and should be a great time!
It’s street fair season! From Thursday to Sunday, stop by the annual street fair sponsored by St. Irene Chrysovalantou Church. Festivities take place on 23rd Avenue from 36th Street to under the Amtrak overpass. St. Irene has one of the most gorgeous interiors of all the churches in Astoria, so if you can take a look, you won’t regret it.
An additional street fair is happening on Sunday, the Broadway Summerfest on Broadway from Steinway to 47th Street, sponsored by the 114th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol. According to my research, Carolyn Maloney will be there, so stop by and ask her your burning questions about the neighborhood.
On the other side of town, Astor Bake Shop (12-23 Astoria Boulevard) is serving up some amazing treats. A slice of maize almond cake and an iced coffee is a fantastic combination, and their blueberry muffins are also amazing. Savory treats in the form of the herbed biscuit or a burger get high praise as well. Yum. Can’t wait til they have their liquor license, too.
And while you’re down in that area, consider checking out the Two Coves Community Garden while it’s still light out. This time of year, plants are bursting with foliage, flowers, and fruit, and it’s really exciting to see so much life thriving in one place. Nearby are a number of murals, which are also very cool and worth a look.
And while I’m sorry that Jeremiah Frei-Pearson dropped out of the Assembly race, his former competition of Aravella Simotas is holding a meet and greet event on Friday evening. If you’re curious about what she brings to the table, stop by and see what she’s all about. $20 minimum donation. The event takes place at 7pm at The Magic Carpet on 25-70 Steinway St.
Finally, SITE is having a sidewalk sale this weekend! Lots of stuff will be 50-75% off, and can be had between noon and 7pm on Saturday and Sunday. More info on the Facebook event listing. SITE can be found at 35-11 34th Avenue.
