Mackenzi Hearts M. Wells

I had the amazingly good fortune to dine at M. Wells yesterday for brunch, and it certainly did not disappoint. The tiny retro diner car sized restaurant is the newest addition to Long Island City’s somewhat sleepy food scene. Opened by a veteran of the Quebec restaurant Au Pied de Cochon, this diner is bursts with the flavors of Montreal style cooking. In addition, M. Wells serves up sustainable Heritage Meats, local produce, and a heap of homemade pastries, granolas, and desserts.

While the food is undeniably not veggie friendly, it was delicious. My dining companions raved about dishes like the salt cod, peas and hash version of eggs Benedict (Bacalao), the Creton (a salty mass of pork deliciousness served with fresh bread) and the Cuban Sandwich. For the veggies, Buckwheat Crepes with real maple syrup and a twist on the classic Spanish Tortilla were served up. We finished our meal with warm farm fresh Peach and Blueberry Pie and homemade Chocolate Custard; both were to die for.

Since M. Wells is still in their “soft opening” phase (I hear breakfasts/lunches only) I’d call ahead before making the trek. Word on the street has it that the menu is growing everyday, too!

I’ve been curious about that place since I first heard it had opened… sad to hear the veggie options are lacking, but those crepes do look delicious!
